Harvey A. Elder, M.D.

After receiving my M.D. in 1957 from Loma Linda University School of Medicine I did my internal medicine residency training at University of California Hospitals, San Francisco and San Francisco General Hospital finishing in 1960. After five years in an Infectious Disease fellowship at Boston City Hospital I returned to the faculty of Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Currently I am a Professor of Medicine and Board Certified in Internal Medicine and a Professor of Global Health, Loma Linda University School of Public Health.
Caring for HIV infected people during the past 24 years I learned to integrate spiritual and medical care. I want my patients to recognize their inherent worth, to value themselves and know that they are precious. I look for opportunities to introduce them to the Great Physician.
I taught internal medicine at the University of Ife, Nigeria in 1975 while attending wards at Ile-Ife Adventist Hospital. Additional short term overseas assignments include teaching in Mexico, Jamaica, Malawi, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Thailand and Philippines. Usually I teach care and prevention of HIV/AIDS and STI integrating these with spiritual care.
