Paul Holtom, MD

Paul D. Holtom, MD, is Associate Professor of Medicine and Orthopedics at the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles. He is also a hospital epidemiologist at the Los Angeles County (LAC)+USC Medical Center and USC University Hospital. In addition, he is Program Director for the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program at LAC+USC, as well as Director of the Jeanette Wilkins Memorial Laboratory and Associate Director of the University Hospital Center for the Treatment of Bone and Joint Infections, both also at USC.
Dr. Holtom received his medical degree from the University of Southern California. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at LAC+USC Medical Center, where he subsequently completed a fellowship in infectious diseases. He spent two years with the US Public Health Service on the island of Saipan, CNMI. Dr. Holtom is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, with subspecialty certification in infectious disease. He holds a Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health. He is a Fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. Among his many awards and honors, Dr. Holtom was named multiple times as Outstanding Teacher at USC Keck School of Medicine.
Dr. Holtom’s major areas of research interest are hospital epidemiology, traveler’s health, and bone and joint infections. His current research involves hospital transmission of multi-drug resistant organisms, the microbiology and therapy of osteomyelitis and skin and soft tissue infections. Dr. Holtom is a popular speaker, having presented lectures nationally and internationally at annual meetings, conferences, symposiums, and CME programs. A prolific author, he has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and abstracts. He holds several prestigious medical staff committee appointments at LAC+USC Medical Center.
